POWER COUPLE Ertz and his wife, Julie, who is a star defender on the U.S. Women’s National Soccer team, got married in the 2017 offseason. The couple was also featured in ESPN Magazine’s “The Body Issue.”
HOLIDAY SPIRIT Ertz partners annually with Bringing Hope Home’s Adopt-A-Family program during the holiday season and does all of a family’s holiday shopping. He also hosts the family at a home game, where he hands out presents and gives a tour of the locker room.
HIGH SCHOOL STANDOUT Ertz graduated from Monte Vista HS (Danville, CA), where he was a first-team all-state selection as a senior after catching 56 passes for 756 yards and 14 TDs. He earned All-Northern California first-team honors from NorCalPreps.com, first-team All-Metro honors from the San Francisco Chronicle, All-East Bay honors from the Contra Costa Times and first-team AllEast Bay Athletic League honors and was also named the 2008 Cal-Hi Sports North Coast Section Scholar Athlete of the Year. Ertz also played high school basketball with Mark Appel, who was selected by the Houston Astros with the No. 1-overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft and now plays in the Phillies organization. Their basketball team went 32-4 and lost in the NorCal finals. Ertz was a center and Appel was a small forward.
BIRDSEED Ertz is the son of Lisa and Douglas, and has three younger brothers: Shane, Nic and Jackson. Lisa is an office manager and legal assistant, and Doug is a software salesman. Ertz also has a Bernese Mountain dog named Apollo. His father, Douglas, played football at Lehigh University from 1981-84 and his uncle, Davis, played baseball at Vermont from 1970-72. Ertz earned his bachelor’s degree in management science and engineering at Stanford.
