Walk Your Talk
I can’t tell you how often I tell myself: “Walk Your Talk.”
I definitely need that reminder when a troll on social media viciously attacks me and my first thought is to respond with a nasty remark. But I know people are always watching, listening, and some are waiting to see Christians on a big platform fail. We’re not perfect and I certainly make mistakes but my goal each day is to walk my Christian talk as best I can so I can be the best ambassador for Christ that I can be and so people can see Christ in me and maybe that will allow others who don’t know the Lord to get to know him because they know me.
Minnesota Viking quarterback Kirk Cousins is an example of an athlete who walks his talk. I sat down with Kirk before last year’s Super Bowl following a disappointing end to his season. He told me he was frustrated and disappointed but he understood “the Lord uses it all for our good and to tell a story and for His glory.” He added: “I look forward to seeing that story unfold in the next few months, in the next few years. And I do believe that He has a reason for why things happen. And I trust Him for that.”
Last week, Kirk led the Vikings to an upset win in overtime at New Orleans in the wild-card round of the NFL playoffs. He had an opportunity to gloat or fire back at his critics. Instead, he said: “Win or lose today, God is still on the throne. And I take comfort in that.”
Kirk’s foundation is in Christ. In bad times, in disappointing moments, he stayed true to who he is. And in good times, he was no different. He walks his talk. He was humble in defeat, kept his faith in the Lord and humble in victory, remaining faithful to the Lord.
