In a recent conversation with Rob Maaddi, Trey told us he believes that God has a rightful place in his life, and that place is before all others. He believes God should be first.

“Putting God first is sort of like the mantra. For me, about a lot of things I have to overcome and deal with a lot of adversity and the common denominator has been my faith to bring me through. I got diagnosed with blood clots when I lost my mom at 15. You know, even during the draft for me, just putting my faith and trust in him, understanding that I'm walking byf aith and not by sight necessarily.”

Smith acknowledges that following God is not necessarily a path of rainbows and gumdrops; there can be significant difficulty.

“You know the path in front of you might be bleak, but also he has a plan for me. He's not gonna fail me. So that's sort of how I put it into words, but, just trust in him.

It’s interesting too that a pro-football player has Matthew 23:12 as the pinned verse on his Twitter profile. It’s the words of Jesus who said “..for those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Smith believes that is a good thing for Christians to remember.

“All you see a lot of dudes are just super flashy and pretty much almost conceited and arrogant in high school. I just said that at the end of the day I didn't wanna beat that guy and I wanted to take the humble road. And I love that verse because guys who flash themselves around and do all these things and exalt themselves are going to be humbled.”
