Trae Benham is Finding Identity Beyond the Court
High Point University’s Trey Benham on Faith, Basketball, and True Leadership
August 17, 2024
In a recent episode of Faith on the Field, hosted by Rob Maaddi, High Point University senior Trey Benham shared his powerful journey of faith, basketball, and finding true identity in Christ. As the first college basketball player featured on the show, Trey’s story is a testament to the deep impact faith can have on and off the court.
Trey’s journey began at Lipscomb University, where he rededicated his life to Christ during his freshman year in 2021. This pivotal moment came after he struggled with his identity being too closely tied to his performance on the basketball court. “Basketball is what I do, it’s not who I am,” Trey explained, emphasizing that his true identity is rooted in Christ, not in sports or worldly achievements.
Now at High Point University, Trey embraces his role as a leader, both on his team and in his walk with God. His approach to leadership is inspired by the greatest example of all—Jesus. “We have the greatest leader of all time in the Bible, and his name is Jesus,” Trey shared. He strives to lead by example, prioritizing humility and selflessness, qualities he sees embodied perfectly in Christ.
Trey’s dedication to his faith shapes his daily routine, from early morning workouts to Bible studies and team practices. He views basketball as a platform to express his faith, using it to share God’s truth with others. Whether it’s through leading a team Bible study or simply listening to his teammates, Trey’s goal is to let the Holy Spirit work through him.
Rob Maaddi commended Trey’s spiritual maturity and passion for sharing his faith, highlighting the need for more young leaders like him. Trey’s journey is a reminder that true identity and leadership are found not in the accolades we receive but in the One we serve. As Trey prepares for his final year on the court, his focus remains steadfast on his faith, with hopes of leading his team to victory and, more importantly, pointing others to Christ.
