This week on Faith on the Field, host Rob Maaddi welcomed Todd Hollandsworth, former National League Rookie of the Year, to share his inspiring journey of faith and baseball. The conversation kicked off with Rob expressing his enthusiasm for having a non-NFL guest on the show and reminiscing about his early days covering Todd's career. Hollandsworth, a South Jersey native, reflected on his upbringing and how it shaped his faith journey.

"Growing up in Cherry Hill, NJ, I was raised in a Christian home," Todd began, "but like many, I had my struggles and periods of backsliding." He shared candidly about the ups and downs of his career, from the heights of winning the 1996 Rookie of the Year to the pinnacle of his career with the Marlins’ 2003 World Series win. Yet, through it all, his faith was a constant anchor, even if it wasn't always front and center.

"I don’t have all the answers, but I know that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior," Todd admitted. He spoke about the pressures and temptations of being a professional athlete and how they often led him away from his faith. "I became more knowledgeable but less wise in my faith. It wasn't until about three years ago that I truly began walking in boldness and living out my testimony."

Rob, relating his own journey from a religious routine to a heartfelt relationship with Jesus, asked Todd about that transformative moment. Todd recounted, "It was during a very low point in my life, filled with guilt and selfishness. I prayed for God to take away my pride and self-centeredness, and that’s when my eyes were opened. My relationship with Jesus became real and all-encompassing."

Todd emphasized the importance of being present and leading by example, especially for his four children. "I wasn’t always present for my family, but now, I strive to start each day asking, 'Jesus, what do you have for me today?' It’s about giving every moment to Him."

Rob highlighted the cultural challenges Christians face today, especially in the public eye. Todd agreed, noting, "Today's Christian athletes are bolder, and it’s crucial to operate out of love. Jesus didn’t come to be combative; He brought love to everyone He encountered. That’s how we break down barriers and show the world the difference in us."

Reflecting on his career, Todd shared some of his standout moments, not just on the field but in his personal life. Meeting his wife, Marcy, in 2000 was a highlight, alongside his memorable seasons with the Dodgers and the Marlins. "Baseball is a journey of perseverance and unity," he said, "and those moments of selflessness and collective spirit are what I cherish the most."

In closing, Rob praised Todd's honesty and transparency, underscoring the powerful lessons shared. "Our relationship with Jesus is a walk, a daily commitment to live for His glory," Todd concluded. Their conversation serves as a reminder of the power of faith, the importance of presence, and the impact of living boldly for Christ.
