Ted Winsley Knows Prayer Matters

He has seen scores of NFL players embrace and be impacted by prayer.

By Faith on the Field Staff, March 1, 2023

Our guest this week is Pastor Ted Winsley, who is the Philadelphia Eagles chaplain for more than two decades. In these two decades of ministry in the NFL, Pastor Ted has witnessed a lot of things. But maybe one of the things that continue to make an impression upon him is the dedication to prayer by the NFL players.

Rob Maaddi and Pastor Ted discussed this, with Rob pointing out that every game before and after the game, there are guys praying. It is a part of the NFL culture that maybe the cameras sometimes avoid. Pastor Ted believes some of that is due to the nature of playing an intensely physical sport like football.

“They play a sport different than basketball, different than baseball, where literally you have to wrestle with your mortality. You have to wrestle with the fact that this could be a life-or-death thing. And then it also causes you to come to grips with the fact that there is someone greater than me I have to trust in.”

In our episode this week “You’ll Understand Later”, Rob and Pastor Ted discussed how the NFL chaplaincy can help guys get past wanting God to help them with football and just get to the point where they want God.

“I call it the lucky rabbit's foot. I realize guys are coming in because they want God to help them with football, and then they find out that they want God. I think I told you the story where there was a player of literally during the Super Bowl run in 2017 that knocked on my door and said “I saw God move in his life and I want what happened to him, it happened to me:, and five hours later he rededicated his life to God and he realized he wasn't coming for a thing, he was coming for someone.
