Jalen Hurts, quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles, knows a thing or two about success. He was a top performer in college at both Alabama and Oklahoma. His talent had him drafted in the second round of the NFL draft in 2020. He became the starter for the Eagles late in that season.
This season, the Philadelphia microscope has been focused tightly on Hurts, as he now carries the hopes and dreams of the Philadelphia faithful. That can be a lot for a young man to handle, which is why Hurts has a policy he follows to navigate the ups and downs of his professional sporting career.
“I put a 24-hour rule on all things, good and bad. You have to look at it: is the glass half-full or half-empty? I can I see a lot of opportunity for this football team, a lot of things that we can do. Just have to have to put those pieces together. You learn from everything and understand that you're going to grow and learn something every day.”
It’s not easy stepping into a leadership role on a professional team like the Eagles, but Hurts believes his childhood uniquely equipped him to be the leader that he is today. He believes his father played a huge role in that.
“I came up being a coach's kid down there, in Houston, Texas. Texas high school football is a huge thing. And I was a part of it for a long time, over (my) childhood, and I saw my dad handle situations. I saw how my dad led the troops. I saw how he coached, saw how he was able to communicate and build relationships with a ton of different people."
John 13:7 says, “Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” This is one of the verses in the Bible that has proven to be inspirational to Hurts.
“It means in the midst of any situation, in the midst of whatever it is. Whatever it is you’re going through, never lose your trust in God and never lose your faith in God. Keep your head down, be graceful, keep on controlling what you can. Give it to the Lord and do your best. Regardless of the situation, you may not know, now but later you’ll understand.”
Hurts also recognizes that the source of his spiritual strength is not found in himself. The direction that he receives is from the Bible, something that is a regular, daily part of his routine.
“Every day, every day diving into it in and receiving the word every day.”
