For Curt Schilling, The Only Opinion That Matters is God’s
By Faith on the Field Staff, December 31, 2021
This week Curt Schilling is our guest and, Curt is also in his final year of eligibility for the Baseball Hall of Fame. He is certainly worthy of that honor: 216 career wins, .346 ERA, 3116 strikeouts. Additionally, he was one of the best postseason pictures of all time: 11 wins and 2 losses with a .223 ERA in 19 postseason starts. Curt helped Arizona win a World Series, helped Boston win 2, and helped the Philadelphia Phillies get to 1.
Curt would tell you, though, that the greatest decision of his life was when he trusted Jesus to save him from his sins. As Curt related to Rob Maaddi, It happened one night when he was alone in his car.
“In 1997 I was having a monster season for the first time in my big-league career and, we just had our second child. I was driving home one night from the ballpark after a really good game, and I've been reading a bunch of books on Revelation and different stuff; I'm an avid reader."
“I asked the question everybody asks at some point “What’s this all about?” and “What’s at the end of all this?” It just seemed, given how much I had experienced in life, it just couldn't be all random. It couldn’t just be all by happenstance whatnot. I just believed that Christ was who everybody said he was. I literally pulled over on the side of the road, said the Lord’s prayer and that was it. I waited for the lightning and thunder and none of that happened, and I just drove home. And I've been one ever since.”
Curt has certainly had to come to grips in his life with many different opinions that people have of him. Many of these opinions, according to Curt, are not based on fact. But he believes you have to remember who you are ultimately accountable to.
“Life gets a lot simpler when the only opinion that matters is God’s."
