Faith, Football, and Purpose: Danny Wuerffel’s Journey
How Danny Wuerffel’s faith transformed his time in the NFL and fuels his mission beyond the game.

The intersection of faith and football is more than just a theme for former NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel—it’s a lifelong journey. In a recent conversation with Marcus Smith II on Faith on the Field, Wuerffel shared his experiences in professional football, his commitment to faith, and how he continues to make an impact off the field.
From Heisman Glory to a Greater Calling
Winning the Heisman Trophy in 1996 was a surreal experience for Wuerffel. “Even now, I’ll go downstairs to make sure it’s still there,” he joked. But while the accolade is a permanent part of his legacy, it’s not what he cherishes most. For him, the memories of his team’s national championship win that same year and the relationships built along the way hold greater significance. “Those feel like a stronger memory,” he reflected, reinforcing his belief that football is about more than just personal success—it’s about shared experiences and purpose.
Faith on the Field: A Mission Field in the NFL
Wuerffel admitted he wasn’t sure what to expect regarding faith in the NFL, but he quickly found opportunities to build community. One of his favorite stories involves starting a small devotional group with teammates called the Daily Bread Club. The idea was simple: read Our Daily Bread before 9:00 AM. If someone got caught not reading it, they had to contribute a dollar to the pot. This small initiative grew to include 63 players, coaches, and staff, turning the locker room into a space for spiritual growth.
More than anything, Wuerffel saw the NFL as a mission field. The insecurity and uncertainty players face—getting cut, dealing with injuries, or approaching the end of their careers—opened doors for meaningful conversations about faith. “Our identities were so connected to being a football player,” he explained. “That created a great opportunity to share faith.”
Staying Grounded in Faith Today
Today, Wuerffel continues to live out his faith intentionally. He finds strength in what he calls centering prayer—starting each morning in silence, breathing, and asking God to be present. This practice helps him listen for God’s voice rather than just seeking answers. He also emphasizes slow, meditative scripture reading and the accountability of strong friendships that keep him grounded.
A Lasting Impact Through Service
Wuerffel’s mission extends beyond the field through the Wuerffel Foundation, which promotes service and unity. He has also partnered with Huddle for Health, a platform focused on promoting positive relationships and healthier lives, in collaboration with the NFL Alumni Association. His goal? To use the influence of sports to create real change.
Through all of his experiences—from Heisman winner to NFL player to community leader—one thing remains clear: Wuerffel’s faith isn’t just something he practiced on the field. It continues to shape everything he does.
