Devin Hester is a former professional football player who was a wide receiver and return specialist in the National Football League (NFL). He is widely regarded as the greatest return specialist in NFL history and was the first and only player to return the opening kick of the Super Bowl back for a touchdown. He spoke to Rob Maaddi in this week's episode 'All We Need'.
Originally drafted as a cornerback, Hester quickly made an impact as a kick returner, and later became a wide receiver. He holds the NFL record for most all-time return touchdowns (punt and kickoff combined) and most all-time punt return touchdowns.
Devin is widely considered one of the greatest returners in the history of the NFL, an accolade that means a lot to him.
“It means a lot When you put me in the category of being the best at a position. Like out of all these years are over decades and decades of players coming in and out in an NFL. It's very seldom that you hear a guy say, “This guy could be the best to ever do it at one position.”
Hester also has the amazing accomplishment of returning the only opening kickoff in Superbowl history, something that is bought up frequently in interviews.
“It's hard to forget about that play. I mean, as much as people talk about us there, it still refreshes in my mind every other day. It's not a day go by where I don't see something that reminds me of that play.”
It was reported that Hester always brought a Bible with him to every game, a fact that Hester confirmed.
“I was born and raised in the church and we kind of use the Bible as our sword. I mean, you never go anywhere without your sword. That was my mindset and I always opened up my favorite verse and put the Bible in my locker before the game and just had it opened up.”
