Derrick Henry's Christian Faith is What Connects Him to God

Even during a difficult injury, Henry had to put God first.

By Faith on the Field Staff, March 25, 2022

Tennessee Titans running back Derek Henry sat down with our Rob Maaddi during Superbowl week to talk about his career and purpose in life. Henry is a two-time pro bowl pick. He was the 2020 AP offensive player of the year and was also a first-team, all-pro that season. And last year in 2021, he was on his way to having an incredible year before he got hurt, but he still ran for 937 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Henry only played eight games before he broke his foot, but amazingly did come back for the playoffs. The Titans were the number one seed but lost in their first playoff game.

Henry had a phenomenal season up to his injury and then was forced to watch his team from the sidelines.  That provided a different angle for Henry to see his team, and himself.

“It was very tough. Cause that's the first time that I've had a significant injury during the season. I missed a lot of games. So it was challenging. It was tough, but I had my daughter and my girl to keep me up, keep me going, keep my spirits up. And I'm just attacking the rehab and recovery process each and every day, but it was definitely tough, was definitely challenging.”

For Henry and the Titans, it was difficult to get the number one seed and resulting bye-week, only to lose in the first game of the playoffs.

“It was tough because we had everything in front of us. We had high expectations, so we didn't meet the expectations. We didn't play as well as we should have as a team and individually, I'm sure a lot of guys feel that way and that's coming up short. (It) definitely stings and it still stings.

Henry is known for putting a cross in eye black on his face before games and has been doing that since college.  It’s a way for him to point people towards his faith.

“I always feel connected to God and know I wouldn't be where I am today without the man upstairs. So me putting that cross on his face, that's just an extra recognition to the man upstairs. I put God first in everything that I do, and I wouldn’t be where I am without Him.”
