DAVE ROBERTS
TALKS CHRISTIANITY

Dave Roberts Christian faith is what defines him, not his managerial role with the Dodgers of MLB. He and Rob Maaddi discuss in this week's episode of Faith on the Field.

BACKGROUND

David Ray Roberts (born May 31, 1972) is an American professional baseball manager and former outfielder. David is the current manager for the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball. Roberts played for five Major League teams over a ten-year career. He then coached for the San Diego Padres before being named Dodgers manager for the 2016 season

PROFESSIONAL CAREER

The son of a Japanese mother and African American father, Roberts became the first manager of Asian heritage to lead a team to the World Series.

Although he played for the Boston Red Sox for only part of one season, his most notable achievement as a player was a key stolen base in the 2004 ALCS. That played ignited the Red Sox's drive to their championship that year. Roberts batted and threw left-handed.

November 23, 2015 was when Roberts became the first minority manager in the franchise's history. Importantly, the Sporting News named him National League Manager of the Year. Likewise, the Baseball Writers' Association of America named him the National League Manager of the Year.

In 2017, Roberts led the Dodgers back to the playoffs. They defeated the Chicago Cubs in five games in the 2017 NLCS.  Also, the Dodgers faced the Houston Astros in the 2017 World Series, where they were defeated in seven games.

In 2018, the Dodgers got off to a rocky start at the beginning of the season. With a 16–26 record to start, they rebounded to win the NL West. Additionally, Roberts led the Dodgers to the 2018 World Series after the Dodgers defeated the Milwaukee Brewers. The Dodgers faced one of Roberts' former teams, the Boston Red Sox, and former Dodgers teammate Alex Cora for the championship. Boston won the series in five games, giving the Red Sox their ninth World Series title and the Dodgers a second consecutive World Series loss.

On December 3, 2018, Roberts and the Dodgers agreed to a four-year contract extension, running through the 2022 season.
