Tua Tagovailoa’s Spiritual Growth is Tied to the Bible

His faith is based on the truths of God's Word, not his changing feelings.

By Faith on the Field Staff, April 10, 2023

Tua Tagovailoa has played three seasons with the Miami Dolphins and had his best one yet last year. He threw for 25 touchdowns with only 8 interceptions and led the NFL with 105.5 passer rating. Tua dealt with the reality of concussions during this past season, but he is looking forward to returning to the Dolphins lineup.

But far greater than his occupation is his relationship with the Lord, which Rob Maaddi was able to speak to him about. Rob spoke about how his relationship with Jesus has evolved from being a fan to a follower to a disciple. And Tua also recognized his relationship with the Lord is in process.

“Well, I would say it's ever-growing. Me and my wife have something that we do every morning: we read a chapter of the Bible every morning together. But that's been really helpful for us and a lot of the things that we've been going through with the challenges of the season with the challenges of having a newborn son with the challenges of family members.”

Spending that time in the Word each day has been an important part of Tua’s relationship with the Lord, and his marriage.

“It's really helped strengthen our relationship, with not only each other but more so with our Heavenly Father. One of our favorite scriptures is I Corinthians 2:9 and what it says is ‘For no eyes have seen, no ears have heard and no mind is imagined what God has prepared for you’, and we always hold on dear to that scripture and we always we're always reminded of it.”

Being in the Bible is an important part of Tua’s spiritual development. He acknowledges the necessity of having a basis for absolute truth in your life.

“I think the only way that you can continue to stay quickened in the spirit is you have to stay in the word. Because if you're not in the Word, you have no one else but yourself. When you're tempted, you have no one else but yourself.”
