Brandon Copeland Believes in Prayer

When Damar Hamlin went down, people like Brandon began to pray.

By Faith on the Field Staff, February 3, 2023

When Buffalo Bill Damar Hamlin went down in cardiac arrest on a January 2nd Monday Night Football, millions in and out of the sporting community held their breath in disbelief at what they had witnessed. But more than that, millions began to pray during and after the event. Thankfully, as a testimony to God answering these prayers, Damar is well on his way to recovery.

Rob Maaddi had the recent opportunity to talk to Brandon Copeland about these events, and specifically, the prayer factor surrounding events such as these. Copeland shared that he believes prayer is effective and is the means of communication with our Heavenly Father.

“For me, it's a conversation with God. I pray all the time. I pray when I found out that you didn't have to necessarily pray traditionally closing your eyes. You can pray while you're driving. You can pray while you're taking your kids for a walk.”

More than just tossing up requests to a spiritual genie in a bottle, prayer speaks of relationship, where we engage with God and show our love and appreciation for him. Copeland spoke of this importance.

“For me it's a check-in, making sure God knows that I'm thankful for everything that I have today. I'm content, I'm blessed and I'm appreciative.”

But Brandon also recognized that we don’t see the big picture when we're praying as God does. And that should impact how we approach prayer.

“But as somebody told me years ago when I was in Detroit... there are these marathons that go on in the cities and there are people who end up purchasing like the sky boxes and the skyscrapers and they watch the marathon. (The runners) look like little ants running around and ultimately there are certain turns that you see as the runner, but you don't see the big picture and so right now. Again, we're the runners and we're not seeing the big picture.”

“So although he might not answer in our time, sometimes you know I understand that for me, everything happens for a reason. And I'm very happy, I'm the man I am because of my scars because of all of the ups and downs and beautiful things I've been through.”
